San Rafael Swell, Utah
When I first scouted this spot at noonday the light was harsh and unflattering, but despite the conditions I visualized the majestic butte that towered above the alienlike landscape basked in soft morning light. Its commanding presence reminded me of a castle overlooking its kingdom (the San Rafael Swell). I returned the following morning, and, as I had anticipated, pastels bathed the imposing formation in gentle hues. There was a grace and beauty about the scene that I found captivating.
